Wax Motif joins Mad Decent
Born Daniel Chien in Sydney and later based in Los Angeles, Wax Motif became closely associated with the growing G-house movement. The style combined the structure and low-end weight of house music with recognizable influences from hip-hop and R&B.
That mixture placed him naturally alongside artists such as Destructo, GTA and Tommy Trash. It also helped his work reach listeners across house, bass music and hip-hop rather than remaining limited to a single electronic subgenre.
The announcement of his Mad Decent signing was accompanied by “Krush Groove” and confirmation that the long-awaited True Joy EP was approaching release.
A producer shaped by house and hip-hop
Before “Krush Groove,” Wax Motif had already attracted attention through remixes of records including Warren G’s “Regulate,” Young Thug’s “Stoner,” and Tinashe’s “2 On” featuring ScHoolboy Q.
Each remix applied his club-focused production style to a familiar hip-hop or R&B vocal. The results reflected the musical combination that would become central to his sound.
“Krush Groove” continued that approach with a dense bass line, clipped vocal elements and percussion designed for a crowded dance floor. Its release provided an early indication of the direction Wax Motif would explore across True Joy.
Wax Motif’s growing live presence
The Mad Decent signing arrived during an active period in Wax Motif’s live career. He was performing at festivals and club events around the United States, helping bring his mixture of house and hip-hop to a wider audience.
His schedule included a Lollapalooza closing event with Nero. He was also preparing a True Joy event in Hollywood to accompany the new project.
These appearances followed earlier performances at major electronic-music events and reinforced his growing reputation as both a producer and DJ.
The True Joy EP
Mad Decent released the four-track True Joy EP on August 14, 2015. Along with “Krush Groove,” the project included “Fly,” “Make It Rain” and “Your Eyes.”
The EP strengthened Wax Motif’s position within the American electronic scene while preserving the hip-hop and R&B influences that had defined much of his earlier work.
“Krush Groove” therefore marked more than the arrival of another single. It introduced a new label partnership and a period that would help establish Wax Motif as a recognizable figure within bass house and G-house.
